THE STORY

This is the Red Hill Hotel. You won’t find it on any map or tourist brochure pointing you to a cold beer or a bed for the night. In fact, it’s pretty hard to find, unless you know exactly where to look. And even then, you won’t find any drinks on tap or rooms to stay in.

The Red Hill Hotel might just be one of Australia’s most iconic fake pubs. Set out on a dusty floodplain in the heart of outback New South Wales, it’s not a real hotel at all, just a cleverly built film set originally created for TV commercials and movies. But out here, with nothing around but heat and red dirt, it feels all too real.

This place is what people picture when they think of the Australian outback. The Hills Hoist clothesline out front adds that perfect nostalgic touch, a staple of backyards across the country. And if you were a brave kid, you probably tried swinging on one of those arms, praying it wouldn’t bend and knowing you’d have to come up with a good excuse if it did.
