Ember

I woke to the smell of smoke drifting through the Mornington Peninsula. Not ideal, but something about that haze pulled me in. I headed for Shelly Beach I'd seen a few rowboats there the day before and hoped one might still be resting on the sand. The smoke thickened as the sun rose, softening the light until everything glowed like fire behind glass. There it was this little boat, quietly waiting. Oars crossed, paint chipped, the kind of subject you can only find when the world isn’t trying too hard. The haze turned to gold, and for a few minutes, the beach felt like it was holding something sacred.
