A darker, moodier Tasmania: alpine lakes, cool-temperate rainforest, waterfalls, mountain weather and the western side of the island.

Designed as a completely different companion to the Bay of Fires trip, this six-day expedition will concentrate on Tasmania’s highlands, rainforest and waterfall country. The final route is likely to draw from Cradle Mountain, the west and selected southern highland locations depending on season and logistics.

Why this journey

Weather becomes part of the photograph.

Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair and Tasmania’s western wilderness move quickly between clear alpine light, low cloud, rain, mist and snow. Add myrtle forest, pencil pines, buttongrass, glacial lakes and waterfalls and the result is a trip where atmosphere matters as much as location.

Photography focus
  • Cradle Mountain / Dove Lake and surrounding alpine forms where access and conditions allow.
  • Cool-temperate rainforest, moss, rivers and smaller intimate landscape studies.
  • Waterfalls such as Nelson Falls and other route-appropriate locations selected for water flow and light.
  • Mountain weather, mist, reflections, long exposure and restrained colour rather than only postcard conditions.
Indicative expedition rhythm

Built around conditions, not a rigid sightseeing checklist.

Photography is strongest when the itinerary can move with weather, wildlife and light. The final route will be designed around the best realistic field opportunities rather than trying to force every location into a fixed schedule.

  • A route designed around a small number of strong bases rather than changing hotels every night.
  • Dawn and dusk at mountain or lake locations, with forest and waterfalls used effectively in softer daytime light.
  • Short and moderate walks selected around group ability and photographic return.
  • The exact mix of Cradle Mountain, west coast and Mount Field / southern highlands will depend on season and operator logistics.
Who it suits

Photographers who want more time in the field.

Open to enthusiastic beginners through to experienced photographers. The emphasis is practical: reading light, choosing positions, working efficiently in changing conditions, improving composition and leaving with stronger photographs rather than sitting through a classroom-heavy workshop.
