A simple decision to drive 1,000 kilometres into the New South Wales outback left me in complete awe of this incredible Country.

I travelled to Mungo National Park in the hope of photographing the full moon rising over the ancient landscape of Lake Mungo. The Willandra Lakes region is a World Heritage site of immense cultural significance. It is where the remains of Mungo Man and Mungo Lady, dated to around 40,000–42,000 years ago, were discovered — profound evidence of the long history of Aboriginal people on this land.

When I arrived, the heat was searing — around 45 degrees. It felt like walking into an oven, but I was eager for moonrise. By sunset the mood had changed. Dark skies gathered and the wind picked up dramatically, whipping sand through the air. That was the end of the plan for day one.

Not one to give up, I explored the other side of the lake the next day, where sculpted dunes and ancient formations have been shaped by wind and rain. The mission had shifted from photographing the moonrise to simply hoping for a sunset. High, wispy clouds gave me a reason to stay. I took my time finding a composition that did justice to the landscape, then the sky exploded with colour so intense it almost looked unreal. It was one of the best sunsets I’ve witnessed, and seeing it unfold over a place with so much history left me in awe.
