The Willandra Lakes region is a World Heritage site of immense cultural significance. It is where the remains of Mungo Man and Mungo Lady, dated to around 40,000–42,000 years ago, were discovered — profound evidence of the long history of Aboriginal people on this land.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen I arrived, the heat was searing — around 45 degrees. It felt like walking into an oven, but I was eager for moonrise. By sunset the mood had changed. Dark skies gathered and the wind picked up dramatically, whipping sand through the air. That was the end of the plan for day one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNot one to give up, I explored the other side of the lake the next day, where sculpted dunes and ancient formations have been shaped by wind and rain. The mission had shifted from photographing the moonrise to simply hoping for a sunset. High, wispy clouds gave me a reason to stay. I took my time finding a composition that did justice to the landscape, then the sky exploded with colour so intense it almost looked unreal. This time, I was filming a campaign for Ray-Ban sunglasses and knew I wanted to include proper outback Australia in the visuals. That’s what led me back to Alice Springs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"709\"\u003eIt wasn’t my first visit. In fact, I’ve been to Alice a number of times now. Something about the place keeps pulling me back. I’ve never felt like I’ve fully captured its spirit  but maybe, just maybe, this time I came close.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"1249\"\u003eWhile scouting locations for the commercial, I was quietly taking mental notes  logging spots that might work for a panoramic landscape later on. We drove past this hill scattered with ghost gums, and I just knew there was a photo waiting up there. I had to climb it. Sure enough, the scene unfolded exactly how I hoped  a character-filled gum tree standing proud, backed by an epic mountain range. It looked like something straight out of a Robert Namajara painting. There was a feeling in the air  that still, timeless kind of magic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1467\"\u003eI ended up returning to that hill every morning and afternoon during the shoot.
